Healthcare Knuggets
Oct 22, 2024
Hey everyone,
I’ve got some great healthcare news to share with you today! First up, there’s been some interesting data presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists meeting. It looks like ibuprofen could potentially prevent delirium after surgery, which could be a game-changer for patients. Additionally, there’s new evidence showing that poor sleep before surgery could increase the risk of delirium, so it’s important to address sleep quality in pre-operative care.
In other news, the FDA is facing an “epic” fight with the tobacco industry over vaping and next-generation nicotine products. It’s a tough battle, but the FDA is determined to regulate these products to protect public health. And there’s some positive news about the Marburg outbreak in Rwanda – two patients have been successfully taken off ventilators, marking a significant step forward in the treatment of this dangerous virus.
There’s also some exciting news from the American Stroke Association – they’ve released new recommendations to prevent a first stroke, including expanded coverage for GLP-1 drugs to manage type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. And the Biden administration has proposed expanded contraception coverage, which could make birth control more accessible and affordable for many people.
Lastly, there’s been a lot of buzz about the cost-effectiveness of weight-loss surgery compared to taking GLP-1 drugs, and some interesting developments in the potential merger of Cigna and Humana. It’s a lot to take in, but overall, I’m feeling optimistic about the progress being made in healthcare.
Until next time,
Summy
Stay Well!
